the short answer is the free editition from avast.com.
it is an excellent product, but you do have to register it annually with a
valid email address or it stops working in 90 days.
also, you could reload that dimension 4100 with windows xp as long as it has
at least 10gb hard disk and 256mb of ram. xp on that machine runs great and
is far more stable than win me.

A non-profit I work with has a legacy application on a Windows Me system.
(It's a Dell Dimension 4100, so this question is at least somewhat
on-topic!)
They've been using AVG Free for the anti-virus software on that PC.
However, I recently discovered that the virus definitions are WAY out of
date. It's AVG Free 7.5 and as near as I can figure, AVG stopped
supporting 7.5 once 8.0 came out. (AVG Free 8 won't install on Windows
Me - that was the first thing I tried.)
Is there an AV program that will still work with Windows Me? Or has
support for Me been dropped? I tried Avira (what I used at home), but
during the installation I got a "This application is not supported on
Windows Me" message. (Or words to that effect.)
I _could_ just go through all the free AV software out there, but I'm
hoping to save myself some time.
Of course, the REAL solution would be to install the application on one of
their PCs with a more recent version of Windows, but that requires finding
the installation software. (CD-ROM? Floppies?) I'm looking through the
cabinets in the office but haven't found it yet. I just hope nobody took
it home with them and never brought it back.

Bob, if you take Chris's advice about xp (I happen to agree with him)
then you will have a lot of options for antivirus software or any
software for that matter.
