Replacing power jack on Latitude D505

Short version,
Neighbor asked me to fix his sisters D505 where the center of the power jack had broken loose.
I ordered a replacement jack, tore the machine down to the motherboard and requested a friend with
better soldering skills than mine (along with the right tools for working with surface mount components).
Question:
Does the power jack have a high failure rate?
Seems to be alot of people selling the part on the internet with same jack priced from $10 to over $30 USD.
When the jack breaks with power applied does it usually fry other components on the motherboard?
There seem to be a couple of grain of rice sized surface mount resistors nearby that look like collateral damage candidates.
