I think you must have misread my post: NONE of the components connected
through the surge protecter (mains input for PC, LCD monitor, printer,
scanner and telephony line for the internal fax modem) suffered any damage
whatsoever, whereas, as I mentioned, the other time this happened some
years ago, without a surge protector the PC and fax modem blew. So I do
think that the Belkin did its job and that without it my PC and/or one of
the other components would most likely have been fried this time as well.
The only thing that died this time was an external USB modem that was NOT
protected as its broadband cable is connected directly to the face plate of
the telephone inlet socket, through which it got a direct surge.

I really do not understand why you think I would have been better off
without it. I also do not understand the basis for your assertion that
the model I use is 'grossly undersized'. Have you looked at its
specifications? For the exact model I have you can read them here:

http://www.belkin.com/aeona/?cid=6&pid=135131

By the way, in the UK all electrical power sockets are 3 pin and the earth
line is required to meet rigorous statutory standards.

Belkin did not 'get me to recommend it'. I have no connection with them
whatsoever, other than that I have bought their products in my local
electrical store. I have not tried any other makes, but no doubt there are
other reputable ones also.

Since you ask, in the UK the Belkin power strip I have costs ~£25 (US$
40). The PC components connected through it and which it effectively
protected from damage would cost ~£2,300 to replace. I think a one off 1%
overhead for insurance against surges is pretty good. Also the Belkin
guarantee offers up to £100,000 if it should fail to protect equipment
connected through it. The USB DSL modem was replaced by a router, free of
charge, by my ISP.

Although the Belkin power strip does not look damaged externally and I
don't know that 'it has failed', as you phrase it, I will replace it as
advised by Timothy.

Last month we had a lightning strike more or less overhead. There was a

That protector stopped what three miles of sky could not? That is
what you have claimed. Reality. A surge too small to overwhelm
protection in the computer easily destroyed the grossly undersized
Belkin. By grossly undersizing it, they got you to recommend it. A
surge confronted both simultaneously and equally. A surge too small
to overwhelm protection in the computer was also too big for the
Belkin..

You spent how much for the Belkin and still had surge damage?
Effective protection means no damage to anything. Effective
protection means you never knew a surge existed. A 'whole house'
protector costs about $1 per protected appliance. Effective
protectors earth a surge AND remain functional. You spent how much
for a protector that failed - left the comptuer to protect itself?
