Re: FireFox: Typing Address NAME ONLY In Address Bar No Longer Works

That "wwwwh.found-not-help.com" should not be happening.
It hints of DNS hijacking and could be your ISP. I know HughsNet was guilty of this some time back. Just as a test, try this:

Do the "about:config" again in FF.
double-click the "keyword.URL".
copy the URL from the popped dialog box (should be the google URL).
paste this URL into your browser (FF or IE) address window.
hit <CR> and note where it takes you.

OK, so you've discovered that a "stock" FF does/can indeed find dell.com by simply typing dell. However, this address bar drop down menu is relatively new. It didn't exist in version 1.x or 2.x and I don't think it was a feature till 3.5 (maybe 3). Versions prior to the drop down menu worked the same way....you type in just the name and FF resolves the www & .com (or dot whatever). Try typing tamu and see what you get. It should be Texas A&M University but you won't get that in the drop down box. FF will add the .edu for you.
Haven't mentioned this and maybe I should have. After typing just the name and hitting enter, I can look at the bottom of my browser window to see how FF is resolving the address. The first thing it says is "looking for *whatever*. Then it says "waiting for GOOGLE" and finally, "waiting for wwwwh.found-not-help.com". Yes, that's 4 "w's" and a "h".

One more thing. Goolge is my default search engine in about:config at
browser.search.defaultenginename

You CAN type dell and hit enter and be taken to dell.com, right?

That's the way it works for me too!

When you say "stock", I'm guessing you mean without any add ons.
No, I upgraded to v3.5 maybe 3 months ago. This started last week.
In hopes of fixing the problem, I upgraded to 3.5.2....yuck! Reinstalled 3.5
Bill, if I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying a "stock" FF
install does not allow the user to simply type in dell and hit
enter and expect to be taken to dell.com.
Okay I had enough! I fired up another computer with FF stock and I type in dell hit return and it went to http:/www.dell.com. Then I typed in Commodore and Google popped up a Google search on Commodore. So it is guessing on what you mean. The drop down menu popped up two choices for dell. The top one was dell.com and the other was Google dell. And that is what it is doing here. As you are typing the drop down menu pops down while I am typing and if you hit Enter it goes to the top choice.
