Hello Everyone,
I recently started having problems with my Dell dimension 8400, I
bought this machine new in '05. The first problem was that I got an
error message from the system saying that the system battery was low
and I think now it's totally dead because every time I boot up the
system tries to boot to a nonexistent diskette drive even though I
change the BIOS settings to boot from the hard drive first. Is it very
hard to change these batteries? Where is it located on the 8400? I
could not find anything in the documentation I had for the 8400.

The second problem started after I downloaded a file containing a
virus. I scanned it with Kaspersky which didn't detect any virus but
it was a different story when I executed the file. I followed the
instructions at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=139313
to get rid of the virus but while performing the last step (running
MGTools) I kept getting a blue screen error. I don't recall exactly
what it said, something about a spool and that the error could have
been caused by new software or hardware added to my system. There was
no "strike any key" message to clear the screen and the keyboard and
mouse were totally unresponsive. When I went to shut down using the
power button, I accidentally pushed it without holding it down. When I
did this, the noise from the fan kept getting louder and louder until
it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, a very strong very loud vacuum
cleaner! I stepped back at first thinking parts were going to start
flying but then reached for the power button and was able to press it
and shut the machine down before any damage was done, I hope. When I
booted up again, the same exact thing happened after I ran MGTools,
the application started to run fine but then I got the blue screen
error and when I used the power button to shut the PC down the fan
started getting louder and louder before the machine finally shut
down.

Does anybody have an idea of what's causing this? Does it have
anything to do with the dead system battery? This is the first time
this has happened with the fan but I have experienced a similar blue
screen error a couple of times since I bought this machine in 2005. I
greatly appreciate any information you all can provide. Thanks!

FYI, I did finally run MGTools in safe mode with no problems.
