Re: Adding a data partition on a new Dell XPS laptop

I participated in a thread on this topic. It's true that if the partition is
formatted as NTFS by DD, Vista or Win7 won't install. But if you click
Advanced and let Vista or Win7 do the NTFS formatting (overwriting the DD
formatting) then the install proceeds normally.

Yes, True Image works in Vista but it doesn't preserve 2048 sector-aligned
partitions when it restores an image. This is probably of little consequence
if you aren't using SSDs or striped RAID.

Acronis Disk Director will not cause partition overlap, as Partition Magic
does. But DD cannot handle 2048 sector-aligned partitions and will convert
the partition to legacy cylinder-aligned. This is a real problem with SSDs
and RAID when you want to retain the alignment for performance. The same
comments apply to Acronis True Image. It can't handle 2048 sector-aligned
partitions when doing partition image/restores. You finish up with legacy
cylinder-aligned partitions.

I looked into this further looking at what Acronis had to say and this
is what they say in their Knowledge base ---

In regard to .....Windows Vista Does Not Install on a Partition
Formatted in NTFS with Acronis Disk Director :

Windows Vista hangs on first reboot, when trying to install it on an
NTFS partition formatted with Acronis Disk Director

This article applies to:

* Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0 Build 2160 or lower;
* Acronis Disk Director Server 10.0 Build 2161 or lower.

Symptoms

1. Using Acronis Disk Director you format a partition in NTFS;
2. On the NTFS formatted partition you are trying to install
Windows Vista;
3. On the first reboot required by the installation of Windows
Vista, the machine hangs with a black screen.

Cause

Issue in the product and partition alignment.
Solution

There are two possible workarounds:

* Format the drive using Windows Vista installation - When
installing Windows Vista, after selecting the target parition, click
Drive Options -> Format. The target drive will be formatted, and the
operating system should install correctly.
* Format the drive using a special Acronis Disk Director ISO image
- contact Acronis Customer Central to receive the ISO image. Please
include reference to this article.

And according to Acronis, True Image 2009 does work in Vista.
I can't confirm either claim by Acronis since I don't use Vista but
looking further into some forums, reports say mixed experiences using
this on Vista.
