I think my sons hd has packed up (keeps getting error message on
startup saying that the computer needs to be restarted "it could be
your av /or a recently installed software programme etc" upon restart
the message re appears. I cant boot up even in safe mode.I have tried
to boot it from the XP home recovery disk also tried the F3 repair
route I have ran CHKDSK and it fails at 50% stating parts of disk
unrecoverable.
so probably need a new HD so:

Q2 He has photos Of my new grandson on it, that I would like to
retrieve is it possible ?
Os Windows XP Home
40 Gb HD !1Gb Ram

Any and all help appreciated

1) can't help with this one as I'm in the U.S.

2) remove the old drive and place it in a 2.5" external USB enclosure
such as this one/or similar:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182145
You can then attempt to view the directories on the drive from another
PC and hopefully copy off what you need though - given the damage and
errors you've mentioned - the effort might be futile. You could even
attempt another CHKDSK - but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

3) Instructions on hard drive install/removal for the i9300:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9300/sm/sullivai.htm#wp1123687

PS: I would guess the I 9300 to use a SATA hard disk. Be sure any
external enclosure can accomodate a SATA drive.

Cheers!
When doing a symptom tree check it came up as ide but when I pull it out
will check.

Brian

Brian -

That's cool. Just verify whether the drive is SATA or IDE/PATA and purchase
the appropriate external enclosure - and replacement hard disk - as
necessary.

Good luck in accessing those files. It may be a coin toss.
