Howard, I'm going out on a limb here but I disagree with those that
say the hard drive is going bad because I don't think you can defrag a
drive going bad. So I would likely rule out the drive but if it makes
you feel better, go ahead and run the mfgr diags on it anyway. I
agree with another poster that running malware cleaners is not 100%
effective ( I speak from experience) so if you really want to rule out
software, install a fresh OS.
You sure can defrag with bad sectors. At least in the past you could. As
many people lost even more data by not doing a surface scan before
defragging. I don't know about modern defraggers. But modern hard drives
are pretty good about finding bad sectors and taking care of them
without the outside world knowing about them. That is why you can't find
any bad sectors on new hard drives while every drive should have them.

Bill, I know you can do a surface scan and mark bad sectors but do not
think you can defrag the drive if it's going bad. But, I'll let
others chime in here if I am wrong.

If the defrag hits a bad sector, either the directory for a folder or
maybe even a bad block of data, it could simply hang the system. Not
100% certain, but definitely possible. Ding Dong! That was a chime...

Exactly my thoughts Ben. I feel more certain about this and I seem
to recall having it happen to me a long time ago.

And thanks for the chime !!!
