Re: External Drives

Hi!

If I use remove with a built in card reader or my PC Card to
USB, they won't detect anything plugged into them later until
a reboot.

And that is an interesting and anomalous result!  ... Ben Myers

With a built in reader, the result doesn't surprise me. Windows cuts
power to the whole device even if you're just removing one card from
it. At least that's how it works with a Sandisk 8-in-1 USB card
reader. Windows has no way to know the difference between internal and
external USB devices.

As far as the PC card reader goes, I have no idea why it would not
work upon reinsertion...

However, I can always just plug it back in and go again.

The Macintosh does not behave the same way, and keeps the Sandisk 8-
in-1 turned on after ejecting cards.

One workaround that I found was to use the "Eject" command that shows
up on the context menu in My Computer. Right click the relevant drive
letter to see it. This makes Windows commit all the data to the media,
but it will keep your reader active. But I could just as easily pull
the Sandisk from its cradle and stick it back in again.
