I just pulled the slim CD ROM drive out of my Optiplex 520 sff computer (XP Pro) and installed a Lite On DVD burner. Snap install but the DVD drive is an OEM version (no software). I have a Nero 7 essentials disc that came with an HP DVD burner, but I never cared much for Nero, plus the damn thing wants to install 600 Mb worth of crap on my hard drive. I just want a simple application to write to CD/DVD discs. Any freeware suggestions? I found the following site that has several for download:

Any suggestions appreciated.
I have the same question but applied to commerical software ? I
gather from here and elsewhere to avoid the newer Nero software.
The overriding problem with Nero, Roxio and NTI's CD/DVD Creator is that they all have hard-coded registry entries for the models of burners they support. So you go out and get a newer burner. Oops! It doesn't work!
This is compounded by the stripped-down OEM versions of the above. OEM versions are keyed to the BIOS of the manufacturer (e.g. Dell) or the brand name of drive with which they are bundled. So you can't use an OEM Nero shipped with a LiteOn drive, for example, with Hitachi-GoldStar drive.
In short, what motivation is there to mess with the commerical name brand products and all their quirkiness, when the freeware does a better job? ... Ben Myers
