There is something else that I don't often hear about. And that is
Windows ability (I haven't seen this under Linux as of yet) and some
video cards. And that is you can select a higher resolution than what
the display can handle. And one of two things will happen.

Either the desktop extends past the screen size and you can scroll
through the larger than screen size desktop with your pointer. Or it
uses the screen size to display all of it, but the display is compressed
to fit. The latter is only possible for some higher resolutions. Also
the toggle to enable this feature isn't reliable. As I have to jump
through a number of resolutions to get it to be enabled sometimes. I am
still trying to figure that one out. ;-)
