Well, folks, what a pain in the rear this was.

I think it is all resolved now.

(I had not updated to net 3.0 and I don't think I need to as TT was running
fine last week)

I basically used system restore. But that wasn't smooth as for some reason
System Restore didn't work either (it said it couldn;t do it!).

Does anyone know why that could happen?

So I ended up booting into safe mode and was able to use System Restore.
However, it indicated that it had to rename some TT files (that's weird).
Obviously there was a TT problem!

TT still wouldn't work. So, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled. Then it
updated smoothly.

Meanwhile, I have to do a Windows Update since I restored to last Monday.

I am wondering if the Windows Update caused the problem.

I guess I'll find out soon enough!

I plan to run my AV program (Avira) and my spyware porgram (Malwarebytes)
after I do the updates.

As I said, what a PAIN this has been.

Glad it seems like it's going to work out for you. I'm not going to
say that registry cleaners are no good because I use them but you do
take chances even with registry back ups.

Anyway, you sound like you are getting back and if it were me, I'd
have a plan what to do before and after a registry cleanout. I
suggest to remember to backup and I'd recommend 3 of them in
succession and on different partitions or drives. I've had backups go
bad when I needed them (what a pain) so I think the odds of 3 being
bad at the same time is very small. Believe me, you'll appreciate the
multiple backups because as you found out, for some reason, things
never go as planned. I always find this out when I go to my backups
so multiple backups or plans, saves my butt. In other words, think
redundancy for backups. Now that I've pretty much restored my laptop
from yesterday (98% so far), I'm going to look at my backup plans more
closely and then taxes tho my CPA will handle that (never have to
worry about my taxes cause I have the best CPA I can get ... my wife).
