I tried both the dos version and the windows one. Neither worked.
Perhaps
that is related to the disk problem.

I did turn on SMART monitoring in the bios, as well as turned off the fast
boot, but there were no warning messages. Now it is running MS ChkDsk
which
at its current rate will take about 4 days to complete. I am not sure
what
to do next. Perhaps just power down and take out the disk.

Instead of taking the drive out entirely, just pull the power and data
cables after power down.
