after contacting crucial and pointing out the incorrect information on their
site they have corrected what they list under the dell optiplex gx620
(desktop, mini tower, and small form factor). it now says "Although the
memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes
from using matched pairs of modules." as well as have the question "does my
computer support dual-channel memory" changed from no to yes. but they
still have the question "do i have to install matching pairs" answered as
yes which now directly conflicts with the other information that they state
on the same page.

crucial definately has it wrong on their site, but not dell. dells states
plainly and correcly in their user manual the following...
"Dual-channel DDR2 memory modules should be installed in pairs of matched
memory size. If the DDR2 memory modules are not installed with the same
amount of memory in each channel, the computer will continue to operate,
but with a slight reduction in performance. See the label in the
upper-right corner of the module to determine the module's capacity."

Conversation: Confusion about RAM for an Optiplex GX620
Subject: Confusion about RAM for an Optiplex GX620
My boss told me he'd like me to get more RAM for his Dell Optiplex
GX260. Its motherboard has four slots for RAM. I went to crucial.com to
use its scanner. It detected just one 512MB module of RAM (I haven't had
a chance yet to actually look inside to confirm). It recommended that we
keep that module and add two more modules, each 1GB, for a total of
2.5GB! This can't be a good recommendation!
In the Q&A section on the same page for the Optiplex GX620, for the
question "Do I have to install matching pairs?" the answer was "Yes."
The following Dell page confirms that the board requires matching pairs:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Memory_Upgrades/productdetai
l.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dfb&cs=28&sku=A0740372&~lt=popup&~ck=XYRelated
"Installation in matched pairs of modules is required, please order
quantity two."
So I do plan on ordering a pair of 1GB sticks. I would imagine it would
probably be a good idea to remove the existing 512MB stick, too (despite
what Crucial recommends).
But I still wonder why the PC is functioning just fine (albeit with not
enough RAM -- there is considerable pagefile activity, but still there
are no other problems) with one stick of RAM. If the board *requires*
matching pairs, how is this possible?

You mention GX260 in the post, but GX620 in the title. The GX620
prefers, but does not require, matched pairs. I have several and run
them both ways and can't tell a difference. Buy the pair and try it
both ways.
Dyslexic moment. :-)
GX620.
Although both the Dell site and the Crucial site seem to say matching
pairs are required, you are correct. I just spoke with a Dell tech who
agreed and that's good enough for me! Thx for the input, Tom (and to the
others as well).
