For what OS? If Vista, I would bypass the Acronis boot CD approach with its sluggish Linux drivers and make a Vista PE image. It's much faster and I see no reason why the image could not be copied to a thumb drive. Since a licensed version of Acronis is required to make the image, there is no requirement to have Acronis installed during backup or recovery. Once the image is made, you should be able to copy it to the thumb drive. Just a comment: I never perform backup or recovery except through a booted CD, no matter what the product says.
A person on the Acronis Forums (Acronis.com) who sells a cheap utility to build the Vista PE image. I think it's around 6.00USD or so.
