The "4" is now a "D", the 4th letter in the alphabet. It probably
means
that the CPU in your system is hyperthreaded, so it provides a limited
speed improvement over a plain Pentium 4. It also means that the
memory
is probably PC3200 and the CPU front side bus is 800MHz, which also
help
performance compared to older, slower memory... Ben Myers

The D is for Dual Core. That was the name before the Core Series. Not
hyperthreaded, a true dual core.

Ah, right. So presumably the flux capacitors are operating anti-phase in the
neutrino stream to create a tachyone emission to remodulate the main
deflector array...

The last time I understood the internals of a processor was when we debated
the relative merits of 32-bit flat memory models against the segmented
addressing schemes of the 8086. I just about got to grips with real mode vs
protected mode, but after that I lost touch!

So what does this mean to me? What is "hyperthreading" and why would its
presence make the dual cores, well I suppose it would be like unreal, man!

Bottom line - would this make it a good idea to try to run the 64-bit
version of vista rather than the 32-bit version? Also would it be really
important (rather than just desirable) to upgrade from 2GB to 3 or 4Gb?

If I do this I need to set the OPC up in a form which can run either Vista
or XP because I do have some important apps which won't run under Vista. I
guess I could do this with either a dual-boot setup (something I've heard of
but have never seen or done other than a brief period when I had a P60
machine with W3.11 and OS2 Warp on a dual boot) or using caddied hard
drives. I think the former would be preferable so that some files could more
easily be shared between the two, so I need to understand why it would be a
"bad idea" as implied by someone above.

Final question - if I have a dual-boot setup can I install (say) office
ultimate and have it run under either OS, or is this likely to cause
conflicts and grief?

Final Final question - according to my config list my disk system is a
"320GB SERIAL ATA RAID 0 STRIPE [2X160GB]". If I decide to add anopther disk
is this likely to have a spare SATA connector (and power cable)?

TIA,

PDR
