Your point is correct, of course. I believe the OP would know to erase the Dell partition first, before merging the empty space into the C: drive.
In any case, it's a moot point, since the OP is determined to do things like Frank Sinatra. ("I did it ...my way.")

If the OP's laptop is like my XPS-M1330, the diagnostice and
recovery partitions are below (ahead) of the C: partitions, so a merge
would put the new space *under* the current OS. How accessible
that space would be and how that would affect addressing within the
partition, I don't know, but it sounds dangerous.
