ben, fyi, should your son ever need your assistance, logmein now has a
version that works on macs and that is free like their basic windows
product.
rnr, what ben said, plus if you didn't have a dvd drive before and want to
watch dvd movies you will also need dvd decoder software. generally dells
ship with a product called cyberlink powerdvd that provides this function.

It's a great deal of fun being the family system administrator and tech
support
person. Well, my son has a MacBook in Japan, so he is beyond my reach,
both
geographically and technologically. But my other son lives nearby and my
wife
has her ever-changing laptop, as I keep upgrading her. (No, not plastic
surgery! Just ever better laptops.)
Main thing is that they all learn to be reasonable in making demands on
dear old
dad. Best to teach them now what I learned long ago and far away in a
management training class, to whit.
For any given computer (or ANY) crisis, on a scale of 1 to 100, how does
the
current crisis rate compared to being taken prisoner by Al Qaeda, which
rates
100? Ask the crisis-burdened person to answer this question before
imploring
you to take action on their behalf. You may, of course, substitute other
crises, like pregnancy, falling off a cliff, Guantanamo, or complete
financial
depression. And it does not matter whether you use a logarithmic or
linear
scale in rating these crises.
If they learn this one, they will be much cooler and calmer through their
lives.
So will you... Ben Myers

No added driver is needed for any optical drive if one is using Win 2000
or

not like
the drive.
Bundled CD/DVD burning software generally has some restrictions baked in
as to
which hardware it will operate with. In my experience, if the software
was
pre-installed at the factory (and on a Dell-branded CD), it is keyed to
the
motherboard BIOS, so it won't run on a non-Dell motherboard. If the
software is
bundled with the drive (like the Nero Express bundled with Sony and
LiteOn
retail-packaged drives), then it is keyed to the drive firmware.
For these reasons, I like both CDBurnerXP and ImgBurn. They are both
free and
both do more or less the same thing as retail software. And they work
with just
about any optical burning drive ever made.
Being a belt-and-suspenders person (maybe its
belt-suspenders-and-fiberglass-cup?), I keep all three on my main
computer. I
guess I still do not have 100% confidence in the freeware burners, but
they are
pretty damned good.
Also, if anyone wants to burn MP3s to audio format to play in a car's CD
player,
the free GoGo MP3 to audio burner works perfectly for this single task.

Appreciate the info Ben. My daughter's laptop is messed up and on
top of that, her cd burner has bit the dust so I'm going to put in
this dvd burner then re-install the OS and start from scratch to get
her laptop back into shape. I have a feeling after that I'll be doing
her pc because last nite I saw she was using her sister's pc which she
never does so I suspect her pc isn't in good shape either :( .
Thanks again.
