that is good news. plenty of sellers on ebay that offer replacements at
reasonable prices. just check the model number and buy a dell branded one,
even if used. i think the pa-10 is the model for your machine. look at
yours to confirm. the adpaters on ebay that don't show a picture or say
'for dell' likely means they are junk and a waste of your money. shop
around yourself, but as an example, ebay item number 250297961801 is a
seller that wants $30 shipped and he has over 800 of them.

It is only one laptop, and it does run on AC power both with and without
hte battery. I know for a fact that it is not the computer, as I borrowed
a family member's adapter, and it works fine. The adapter didn't go bad,
per se, just the pin inside the barrell broke off. The DC jack is fine.

do they run on ac power without the battery? if not, then i would be
more suspicious of the power connector in the computer than the power
connector on the end of the ac adapter. i have actually never seen a
dell ac adapter go bad... and you have two suspicious one which seems
very unlikely. it is more likely that the ac jack in the laptops have
failed. this was a common problem with certain models including the 630m.
you can get replacement jacks on ebay for cheap, but you have to be
skilled to disassemble the system to get at the motherboard and skilled
at doing board level soldering.

The laptops do work, yes, but they don't charge. I just put money into
a new battery, and wanted to try to get a little return on it before
calling it quits. I guess the other option would be to buy a new
adapter now too, but as I have found out, only the Dell ones work.
Thanks anyways.

don't know where you can purchase just the tip, but that error message
is very common. look on the dell forums and you will see lots of
people that get that error message even when using the correct adapter.
dell seems to ignore the issue, but the laptops happily work despite
the warning.

I have a question. Is there any place that sells replacement barrels
for Dell Laptop power adapters. The center pin in mine broke off, and
I wanted to try to fix it before purchasing another one (or just to use
this one as a backup). I have a Inspiron 630m, with dimensions
7.5x5.5.12.5mm. I know this is the reason cause I get the message
"invalid power adapter" when trying to boot up, which never occurred
before this adapter being broken. Also, is there a setting somewhere to
continue to use the adapter without the pin, as I read that the pin
only communicates the adapter info to the laptop. Thanks in advance.
John
