Question: What are the advantages / disadvantages of DSL vs Cable?
Perhaps the only negative I can think of about DSL is that you have to
have line filters on almost everything for DSL to work properly.
Where I lived, they supplied all of them for free except for my home
alarm which I bought on line.
Your phone company should be able to provide you with a DSL Splitter
that installs in your incoming box from the phone line. This splits
off a separate line for your DSL modem, and filters everything else.
Does away with the need for individual filters at all your phone
jacks. I think I had 11 filters hanging everywhere. All our phone
lines and 3 TiVo's plus our alarm system. Of course the DSL Splitter
is not free. In my case it was $100 for the total install.
The deciding factor for me, after several years of cable, was
reliability. Which do you find more reliable, your cable TV or your
telephone? I had nothing but trouble with my cable connection with
outages, maintenance downtimes, etc. The DSL connection runs
perfectly with zero problems to date. Have been on DSL for about a
year.

Charter cable downtime was a problem (tho infrequent) for me. A few
times I called and asked for the month of service free and they did
it. That's not as important, though as the frustration of not having
the Internet. It is very surprising how much people are now somewhat
"dependent" on the Internet.
