I am ditching Charter Cable and going with DSL. This will finally
force me to go to an e-mail provider (web based) that isn't tied to an
Internet provider.
(hopefully Charter will let me forward my e-mail for a period of time,
but if not I'll deal with it.)
So, the question is: what is the best web-based e-mail.
I am considering gmail (is it still in beta?). Other options would be
Yahoo, AOL (since it's free now), or one that Microsoft offers
(hotmail, or live, or whatever they are calling it these days).
Journey,
I suggest gmail, not in beta at all. It gives you both options, reading
and
responding through your browser or with a freestanding desktop email
package
like Outlook, Thunderbird or Eudora.
Do things in this order:
1. Sign up for your gmail account.
2. Set up your Charter email account to forward all email to your gmail
account.
3. Tell every one of the people with whom you correspond to begin using
your
gmail email address.
4. Wait a bit. How long? When we left Earthlink dialup for Charter, I
waited
30 days to cancel Earthlink. But Charter is more expensive, so you may
want to
wait only a few days, or not at all.
5. Get DSL installed.
6. Pull the plug on Charter, but do not rip out any of their wires. You
never
know. You may go back to them some day. But they are pretty awful.
Charter will not forward your email once you have terminated your internet
service with them. ISPs are not like the USPS, which will forward mail
from
your old address for 30 days.
AOL with all of its garbage in their user interface is cumbersome. I do
not
understand how they can still be in business.
Stay away from the email from the Borg. Isn't Windows enough???
