Question: What are the advantages / disadvantages of DSL vs Cable?
Well I had cable originally and about 6 or so months ago I switched to
DSL. For me, the final straw was when they told me for I think the
3rd time, that I had to have a new cable buried in my yard... a run of
about 90'. I don't like that because I have an underground sprinkler
system and a nice lawn and I don't believe coax cable should go bad in
less than 3 years if buried deep enough and without sharp bends. In
any case I said enough was enough and switched to DSL. The cable
company tried real hard to keep me but I kept saying no thank you.
For me, the cost is about the same so I don't really save anything but
I don't have to worry about replacing buried cable in my yard.
Reliability is so far a bit better but in fairness, I haven't had DSL
as long as I had cable. I get about the same speed because I chose a
more expensive plan to do so. In my neighborhood the cable and DSL
companies have a monopoly so there is little or no choice.
I never used their internet offerings... ie: usenet or email so that
never was a consideration for me. I have a private email company (web
based) as well as a private NSP (giganews). I'm satisfied with both
tho neither is free.
Perhaps the only negative I can think of about DSL is that you have to
have line filters on almost everything for DSL to work properly.
Where I lived, they supplied all of them for free except for my home
alarm which I bought on line.
