how are you so sure its the same speakers...
i always thought the bios beeps come from a little speaker directly on the
MB.

it could also be the audio amplifier is shot on the MB, but the bios
doesnt need that.
try replacing the speakers in the laptop, surely they connect via a
header. but if the headphones work, that means the amp s/b good.
so maybe the header cable came loose?
liquid in the speakers cause a short.
its back to what Stew said.

Think about it?
what would be the point of having a diagnostic that did not test the actual
speakers and instead tested an onboard speaker? doesn't make sense now does
it? thats because there is no onboard speaker in a laptop

Just been handed an Insp 1520 boots fine no problem, i think looking at
it that there was some liquid ingress but its not on the S/B, now heres
the rub there is no audio in windows through the speakers but its fine
through the head phones, however run the DIAGS from ta Dell cd and
there is no problem with the audio you can here all the notes the diag
plays and if you deliberatly cause errors with the bios you can here
the error beeps as well, it just will not play through the speakers in
Windows.

I have reinstalled from the recovery partition no joy, i have done a
fresh install of windows using at least 3 Dell copies of XP pro and
still no sound out the speakers, I've disconnected the speakers and
then reconnected - no joy I've downloaded all the drivers off the dell
site (chipset installed 1st) and still no joy.

so now i'm stuck is it the board or is it the speakers????

Casting the possibility of liquids aside.....

Bad speakers or a bad audio pinout/header/speaker connect on the system
board.

Yeah but if that was the case why does it work in the BIOS and DOS and
not in windows????
