Hi!
My current machine is a Dimension 4700 with an Intel Pentium
3.0 GHz CPU.
Intel Pentium dual-core 2.0 GHz (Included in Price]
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz (add $80)
How do these two new CPUs stack up against my current
machine? Are both of these dual core CPUs faster, even
though their clock speed is less than 3.0 GHz?
They will be faster, more powerful and run cooler than the Pentium 4
you have now. The lower clock speed is a result of increased internal
efficiency, and you will find that at least the Core 2 Duo part is
very fast.
I'm not sure what Dell is selling as a "Pentium dual core"...from what
I've read it could be a Core-based part or possibly a Pentium D.
Do I really need the Core 2 Duo?
You might want it. If you get the Core 2 Duo, your processor will be
64-bit ready for certain, which might be a benefit if you plan to
upgrade or replace the operating system with a 64-bit one. (There are
still some driver availability issues with 64-bit operating systems
and some hardware, but they are getting smaller.)
Even if you don't plan to do that, you might want the "better"
processor, especially if you plan to keep the system for a while.
William
