i'll say it again, you are likely to be disapointed at megar, if any,
performance increase from the memory upgrade. putting that $50 plus $20
more for the faster hard disk that will make windows load much faster and
make opening any application load more quickly is a much smarter move. 5gb
free space is not very much for windows and possibly part of your overall
disapointment with this system. if you don't want to spend $70 on this old
dog, and i am not saying it it worth it, then don't. but if you don't want
to waste money then do nothing rather than waste it on the ram upgrade.
good luck.

Chris:
Now you are adding cost. First of all, my hard drive is still about 5.56gb
free space and 28 gb used. That's not a lot of free space, but for my
needs I think it will be okay for now. I suspect if I went through it,
there's stuff I can unload. For example, I have one file that has 2.6 gb
of pictures which I can easily move to an external hard drive. So, I think
I'm in good shape there for awhile.
If I need more memory AND more hard drive, that might really be the time
to get a new laptop, wouldn't you think?

ni this case crucial is only a couple of dollars more than generic memory
and they are easy to deal with in the case of a problem... but i am with
stew and think that you are wasting your money on additional memory. i
think that your money would be far better spent on a hard disk
replacement. and in the process you will end up with not only a faster
drive that will make the system feel faster but will have a lot more
additional storage space. if you also purchase an external usb 2.5" hard
disk enclosure then you can clone your exiting drive to the new before
installing the new drive internally. then you can put the
old/slow/smaller drive in the external enclosure to use as a place to
store some backups.
$70 for a 160gb hard disk delivered from newegg, you can go smaller but
it is not much of a savings ($7 less for a 120gb)

Agree. When I say "competitive", I don't necessarily mean cheap.
Competitive
is within spitting distance of the prices I pay to my distributor, a
small
percentage difference one way or another. Distributor prices are always
supposed to be "wholesale" and lower, right? Much of the time they are.

close. You are in luck. The Inspiron 2200 user's guide says DDR. Go

I don't recall ever seeing Crucial not competitive in their pricing.
Besides, even if they were a little higher in price, I doubt it would
be that much more and they are "very reputable" so the few dollars
more might save a lot of headache in the long run. Of course this is
my opinion.
