sounds like resetting the bios is what helped get the os installed.
what version bios do you have? a07 is the current one and it is noted in
a03 that vista support was added... if you have a version earlier than a03
then that could be your problem.

Yes the disk was the same O/S disk and was the same HDD as well, the
video card is an Nvidea 512mb card, unfortunatly the diags partition has
been removed so i'm going to run some other diags, over the next few
days, I do have a 256mb nvidea card out of a M170 which I could try and
then I will know for sure if it's the card or not I could also do a two
way swap with the m170 and put the 512 card in that and see if that
crashes

was this successful vista install from the same install disc previosuly
used unsucessfully? do you attribute the success to this installation
to the disc or to resetting the bios to factory defaults (and the
potential overclocking selection previously mentioned). what video card
is in the system and does it pass dells diagnostics.

Yeah fans are all working, have set the BIOS back to Factory default,
have now got an install of DellVista Ultimate on it but as soon as you
put it under pressure Ie try and run any programme it crashes, so I'm
leaning more and more to graphics card, though why it's perfectly
stable under Linux i don't know

i would boot the dell diags cd or partition and run the tests.
if those make it thru, it sounds like your cd install is bad.
otherwise if the diags also crash,
then it sounds like heat related...
did you blow out the dust bunnies?
are the fans working?

Just picked up a faulty XPS M1710 so its got a 512mb pci express
nvidea graphics card, 2.3Ghz dual core CPU 2 gb ram , and the problem
is cannot install windows, get to the same part every time and then
just reboots. I've tried putting a different hard drive from another
machine preloaded with Vista and that gets to progress bar and then
reboots. I've tried a different HD, no fix,
tried different known good memory - no fix
Tried known good CPU - no fix,
so I guesse that just leaves the M/B or Graphics card unlesss I've
missed something glaringly stupid
.
