Balky Bluetooth in Linux M1330 laptop?

The following applies to Ubuntu:

From time to time, the Bluetooth in my XPS-M1330 laptop
just refuses to recognize my Dell Bluetooth Travel mouse.
Recently, after installing a new driver for the Broadcom
wireless chip, I couldn't get my Bluetooth mouse to connect.
under Ubuntu. After a couple hours of fiddling with it, I did
a Google search, and I found an obscure refernce to a
command line that did the trick:

sudo hidd --server --search

(Note the double dashes preceding each of the 2 arguments.)
After running that, the Bluetooth mouse connected immediately.
