Chris:
Thanks so much for your suggestions.
I have some questions:
I configured a system (but didn't add it to my cart yet). Where do they
give you the opportunity to upgrade to XP? I would definitely want to do
that. Also, it would seem that the 2 extra years of warranty for $99. is a
reasonable deal. Do you agree?
Finally, I get confused with the different laptops. There is the Inspiron,
Lattitude, Vostro, and a brand new one (I forgot the name). Are there major
differences between them?

to be blunt, it is a waste of money. $335 (assuming it does not go a
penny higher) and the fact that a new battery costs $150 and that they do
not warranty the battery*, and since you just need something basic, says
to me that you should buy something new.
start here with this $399 configuration, add the x2 processor for $25,
choose the glossy truelife display for $0 more if you want, increade the
memory to 2gb for $35, increase the hard disk to 120gb for $15, choose the
dvd-rw for $15 more, and you have a good system with a full warranty and
30 day return policy for not much more than your risky used auction
computer.
also, you can pay $99 more to get the system with xp installed with option
to downgrade to vista should you ever find a need to do so.

hope the cut and paste works. Below is an item from an auction site.
I am
wondering what a good price would be. My needs are not extensive: just

How high should I bid on this? It looks like I could use it
immediately. I
might upgrade to 1 gig but I'm not sure that us even necessary for my
purposes. Is it?
S/H is $35. Current bid is almost $300
