Looks like this is the weekend for reinstalling OSs...
Anyway, I've got a Dimension 4550, which has been running the original
factory install of Windows XP Home since March 2003. I want to set it back
to factory, rather than reinstall the OS, but I don't think this vintage
machine came with that capability. The owner's manual only talks about
System Restore and a complete reinstall from the OS CD.
There is a directory on the hard drive, C:\Dell\Images\Express.img and
IMG.dir, but these are under 1MB, and I don't think these are factory
images, or even programs which would launch a factory image.
Am I stuck with a complete reinstall? If so, I may just reinstall on a
larger hard drive and put the original hard drive on the shelf (or install
as a slave drive) in case I run into trouble with drivers for peripherals
and new video/sound cards, etc.
If given a choice, I'd do a clean install (might even be faster to
do??) but you likely will have to d/l drivers from Dell to get it to
work properly. And if you do buy a larger drive, you could also buy
Acronis True Image 10 or 11 and make a restore partition (hidden
partition with an image of your partition(s) ). I did this on a pc
that I worked on last week. And if it were me, I'd just use the old
drive as a slave drive or external drive.
Hi, I remember a restore scheme Dell had called ZZTOP and the 4550 could have had that. I never tried to use it but rather just did a clean install of XP. The only driver I have in my folder for the 4550 is a chipset driver (R47822). The latest BIOS is A06 (BR59793). I think I remember that the last install I did was simply boot to the Dell Reinstallation CD and let it run to finish. Everything was there except a video card that was installed last year... Dean
