i assumed he tried that.
since he just reinstalled windows fresh,
he probably didnt install the sound drivers.
which do not come in automatically on most dells.
all of this is elementary, once you know how to do it!

it seems like you could be missing a sound driver.
that would cause that icon not to appear.

I have just carried out the installation of a new HDD and clean install of XP along with all the Dell software from the CD's supplied. The M60 has a volume control and a mute button just to the left of the on/off button. The volume being a rocker type switch. The switch functions but in a previous life (the old HDD) a small slider icon would appear on screen showing the volume setting. This does not appear and I have looked through all Control Panel settings to no avail. Can anyone help to restore it.
While on the topic of new HDD drives, I would like to comment on Seagate Momentus drives in particular the 2.5" Notebook variety................they are noticeably noisy compared to Western Digital and Hitachi Travelstar. The latter 2 drives are more intelligent than the Seagate in their ability to close down immediately if not being worked. The Seagate will only stop spinning by the shut down function within the Power Saving settings which has a minimum setting of 3 minutes. Or is there another way of stopping it under 3 mins.
thanks
