Typical example of the flakiness.

Because I do this sort of thing (Windows updates) mindlessly and repeatedly,
almost obsessively, I have downloaded the SP2, SP3 and IE7 install files. I
keep them on a flash stick, when whenever Windows update prompts me to install
one of them, I do it from the flash stick, rather than endure long download
times. It makes the headache of updating Windows go away faster.

I am pretty sure one can bypass the WGA nonsense by downloading and installing
from flash. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't update. Even XP,
after 7 years, continues to have security holes that need to be plugged. If you
don't update, you are potentially screwed by some security threat. I you do
update, it continues to be a pain in the ass.

I'll take my chances <g> ....
So far.... no updates but no problems either and no penetrations due
to router and software firewall and virus checker (ok an occasional
reboot on the dsl modem) and encryption on sensitive stuff.
Inotherwords hack thru my firewall and router and then have fun
decrypting my sensitive stuff if you have enough time <grin>. And if
they try to mess my system up, I'll just restore it from backup. I
feel better doing this than relying any more than I have to on MS who
has screwed me enough in the past.
