Typical example of the flakiness.
Because I do this sort of thing (Windows updates) mindlessly and repeatedly,
almost obsessively, I have downloaded the SP2, SP3 and IE7 install files. I
keep them on a flash stick, when whenever Windows update prompts me to install
one of them, I do it from the flash stick, rather than endure long download
times. It makes the headache of updating Windows go away faster.
I am pretty sure one can bypass the WGA nonsense by downloading and installing
from flash. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't update. Even XP,
after 7 years, continues to have security holes that need to be plugged. If you
don't update, you are potentially screwed by some security threat. I you do
update, it continues to be a pain in the ass.
If all the systems I touched were identical, I would image a drive, but such is
not the case... Ben Myers

My missus got notification of a batch of updates the other day - I
deselected the useless ones like the lookOut spam filter and the
malicious software util, but left another XP update and SP3 ticked.
As soon as I hit "install" the update option disappeared, and nothing
was installed. It hasn't reappeared, and they can piss off if they
think i'm going to install their own malware (WGA) to get it.
This is on a legit system btw, but I don't want to be forced to jump
through hoops that didn't exist when the system was purchased to
update.
