You are making way too big a deal of this.
There was a screwup. Blame ZA or MS, but it's a moot point. ZA came out with
a very nice fix. They did it quickly.
Problem solved.

Had two calls for help to work on some Dell computers this past week.
Both
owners complained of a lost internet connection, one an Inspiron with wifi
and
the other wired. The ISP tech support person told the owner of the wired
internet connection that the Ethernet card (on board Ethernet in a
Dimension
8250) had to be replaced.
I solved the first one with a little thinking and the second one became
real
easy, because I'd seen the same problem one day earlier. I shut down Zone
Alarm
and the internet suddenly worked. I uninstalled ZA, then installed the
latest
version, and the internet still worked. Problem solved.
Yesterday, exactly the same thing happened to my non-Dell desktop
computer, and
I did the same thing.
Checkpoint, current owners of Zone Alarm, on its web site states:
"Installation
of Microsoft Update KB951748 may result in loss of Internet connectivity."
In
other words, blame Microsoft. Maybe they are right, but the whole thing
smells
of a coercive effort to get people to look at their web site and maybe buy
some
products. To download Zone Alarm, you have to wade through quite a few
pages of
ad blurbs.
I have used Zone Alarm for quite a few years, and I must say that it has
helped
keep my main computer trouble-free. Now my faith in Checkpoint has been
shaken
somewhat... Ben Myers
