I am not impressed with Ubuntu. The user interface seems very
unrefined. Am I missing something?

Other than development software and Open Office, does Linux have any
impressive creative software (e.g. mind mapping, or graphical like
Inspiration) or knowledge management software (e.g. One Note 2007,
Info Select, Devon Think)?

Can Linux software compete with Windows or Mac OS commercial software
or is it mostly a hodge podge of second-rate open source software?

It seems to be a great server or developer OS, one I would prefer for
implementing a web-based server app, but for a "desktop user" OS I
always find it lacking.

Yep, that's what I thought -- for a consumer OS Linux isn't ready for
prime time, and it will probably stay that way.

It's a good developer OS. I am going to take a class on Ruby on Rails
and will do that on a version of Linux.
