I get this message when I switch the computor on which has only justYou're going to have to remove the malware.
started
error loading C:/programFiles/mywebs-1bar/1bin/mp3plugin.dll
the specific module could not be found any ideas ????
Now might be a good time for the OP to review their entire thinking on
security...
Couple of things to think on (i'm not aiming this at you Stew):
a) do you have an anti-virus program ? (several are free, and just as
good as commercially available programs, if not better !)
Personally I recommend Avast with a better skin (MacLover OSX is nice)
Avira is about as effective as Kaspersky, but free - but may lead you
to being completely paranoid
AVG is last on my list from previous experience (12+ months ago) -
every machine I was called in to help clean with AVG had at least two
active viruses in memory, hence my reluctance...
As a starting point, i'd suggest creating a directory on your desktop
and downloading Sysclean and the virus signatures (links below),
unpack the virus signatures, then run the Sysclean program. It's a
one-off virus checker that uses the latest official detection that
their fully-paid for product uses. Note that you may need to disable
any existing AV software before you run it, as they can clash. It'll
open several "DOS" style windows as it goes, so don't panic :-)
b) Firewall ? (ZoneAlarm free is good enough for almost anyone)
c) what web browser do you use - IE may be semi-safe with (d) below
but you'd be far better using Firefox or Opera for as much as
possible, only falling back to the dangerously insecure IE for sites
that are so badly written they only with with IE.
d) have you locked down activex to acceptable risk levels
(SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com is free and very good)
Basically, you install, update, close it, and forget about it for a
month or two, then update, close it, and repeat as before. Almost
completely sodding idiot proof !
e) do you scan on a regular basis for malware
I still use and recommend Spybot Search & Destroy - there may be
"better" detection programs out there, but I find Spybot good enough
for most problems. Vundo and SmitFraud are slightly special cases, but
if there's any hint of either, there are free apps to sort them.
f) ...and rootkits ?
I like Blacklight, as it's foolproof. Luckily i've never come across a
rootkit yet, but malware is definitely heading in that direction as
it's far harder to detect / remove.
In really basic terms, rootkits load before Windows, and programs that
load in Windows only see what happens _after_ Windows has loaded.
The stuff I update most regularly on my "emergency CD" is as follows -
some are duplicated as sometimes a download link goes down :-}
