that could be the case, and it something that is really easy to check
(disable it temporarily). but i also wonder how much memory this system
has, when this problem started, has the op tried windows system restore.
have heard of bad memory resulting in odd behavior that a simple memtest86
could sniff out...

Sorry, I'm using Process Explorer by Microsoft. Unfortunately, when
CPU usuage spikes, I can't access process explorer or even Task
Manager. Only option is to reboot.

Well, you said you downloaded a utility to tell you what was using the
CPU time, but you haven't passed that along.

You can also use task manager to check CPU usage. Open it and go to
processes. Click on the CPU column and the process will line up
according to usage. Watch it for a while and see which processes are
using the CPU time.
