a good reason not get blue ray is the cost. you'll pay $200 more for a
dvd+-rw blue ray drive, or about $150 from a internet retailer. and you
need to add in the cost of a compatible video card. all said it is a lot of
money for something that you don't even know if you will use. and i
disagree that having a second dvd drive will make copying easier. and
incase you are unaware, you can't copy movie dvds on these recordable drives
unless you are willing to violate copyright laws and get thrid party
software that reduces the quality of the orignal disc recording to something
that will fit on retail purchased blank recordable dvds. having a second
optical drive becuase you think it might make it easier for a and ocasional
user to copy things is also a misnomer. two drives just makes things more
confusing for a novice (which is the source drive, which is the destination
drive, does only one write or can the blank disc be inserted anywhere....).

If I may ask, what is your reasoning for including a Blu-Ray drive? Is
this
machine going to be part of a home theater system? I think, if you intend
to use it to watch movies, that you will soon find a reason to buy a
stand-alone Blu-Ray player and a 42 inch, LCD television.
I mention this because I have a couple of friends who insisted that they
would be just fine with their 24 inch, LCD monitors, HDTV capable, and
after
seeing my brothers 47 inch LCD television, immediately began beating
themselves over the head with a club. They don't watch movies on their
computers anymore. In fact, just about everyone I know that has a big
monitor now just uses it for the computer and they watch television on a
big-screen LCD or Plasma set.
That is a good point. The computer won't be part of a home theater,
and I don't imagine my parents would watch movies too often on the
computer. They have a 35 inch TV now, and will probably be upgrading
to a larger HDTV within the next couple years.
But the computer is coming with a DVD burner, and I wanted to get them
a DVD-ROM drive so it would be easier for them to make copies of
discs. While looking at DVD-ROM drives, I noticed that there are Blu-
Ray DVD-ROM drives, and I figured why not get them the latest
technology? Even if they won't watch Blu-Ray movies on the computer,
it is still the case that at some point in the future, software will
start to be distributed on Blu-Ray DVD-ROM, instead of regular DVD-
ROM.
