Conversation: Which Processor?
Subject: Which Processor?

Configuring an XPS-420, these two processors are the same price.
Which is
better ?
1 - IntelR Core2 Duo Processor E8400 (6MB L2 Cache,3.0GHz,1333FSB)
2 - IntelR Core2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)

Depends on what you're doing. If you're using an app that can use
four processors well, then the Q6600 is a great choice. If you use
apps that really only use one processor but chew them up, the 8400
is a better choice.

Tom's right.

I'll only add that with either CPU, the XPS420 is a whoop-arse system
capable of most things thrown at it.

Any way to get this with XP instead of Vista?

No - but you can install XP on it afterwards if you want. The only thing I have been unable to get to work is the LED Display on the top of the case.

A list of the required drivers is given here

board.id=Tech_Talk_XPS&message.id=30626&query.id=179583#M30626

The only tricky bit is getting the SATA drivers installed - Windows XP will only load them from diskette. My machine never had a built in diskette drive but a USB drive worked OK

Did you get the Bluetooth/19-1 reader to work with XP using the driver in the list? This driver appears to be for Vista only. The additional info at Dell states:

"This release is for the Dell Wireless Bluetooth Module 355C, integrated in the Dell Media Card Readers only. This module supports operation with Microsoft Vista only."

Just curious, since the card-reader on the XPS 420 is definitely a problem; i.e., card "drives" disappearing, unable to read card, device not present. I haven't been to the Dell forums for awhile (2-3 wks?), but the last time I checked, Dell still had no solution to the reader problems.
