I also use AVG free and if you are referring to the window that pops up during the daily update, you can turn that popup off. First thing I do!

I use Free AVG because it doesn't slow my computer..
I have Avast on my wife's computer because she is intolerant of the AVG popup windows.
I have tried McCaffee, Trend and Norton -they all slowed down my machines too much and used a lot of resources.

FYI,
I'm seeing annoying web performance with AVG 8.0 due to (2) new added
features of the program:
-"Web Shield"
-"Link Scanner"
Obviously a well-intentioned part of the program to avoid malicious
scripting on websites. One of the interesting features of the Link Scanner
is that it apparently "polls" results/hits brought up by a google search (or
any other search engine). Obviously, this takes time and resources.
I'm seeing unacceptable (for me) latency in the displaying of web-based
forum posts, other pages as well. Disabling those features or the entire
program returns my system to normal browsing speeds.
FWIW.....

I'm going to check out Kaspesky
www.kaspersky.com
and don't mind paying for a good one.
It had very good reviews on a recent thread here.
I used to use Avast but don't know if it too has gone the way of
hogging resources.
