Even if this drive were unformatted, wouldn't it
at least show up in the device manager or disk
management ?
You are experiencing a failure long before Windows ever "knows" that a
drive is connected.
It is very likely that the bridge chip in your external enclosure has
died. Another possibility is that the power adapter for the enclosure
is weak, not putting out a needed voltage or failing. You could also
try a different USB port or cable.
I had a SmartDisk brand enclosure with an 80GB IBM Deskstar in it that
would work fine when cold. Later, Windows would either lock up or drop
into a stop error. I discovered that a five volt regulator inside the
case was randomly failing. After putting the drive into a new external
enclosure, it worked perfectly once again. I still have it and it is
still working...so try pulling the drive out of the enclosure before
giving up.
