Perhaps if only system files were changed then a restore point mightwork ??? otherwise I think I would use a 3rd party file manager with
search capabilties and dual windows (columns) to do this job. I have
my favorite "total commander" but I know there are others like "Opus"
and "Powerdesk" which I think are/were popular.
I have PowerDesk, I think I have Total Commander, and I have never
heard of Opus. When wonderful Vista came out I didn't want to use any
3rd party file managers because of the possible risk of data loss due
to Vista incompatiblity.
I could have titled my posst:
"I don't want to be a Mac Head but Microsoft drove me to it"
:-)
I think some of those 3rd party mgrs are Vista compatible now but you
could check on the net to see how compatible they are from other users
first. You could do backups first too if that helps to reassure you.
Just some thoughts to help you but I understand if you want to stay
within Vista.
The best file manger ever made, period, lives here:
http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php#download
It does look good -- I am going to check it out. I would like fast
image thumbnails. It doesn't seem to support dual panes, but
sometimes that's more trouble than it's worth. I like the tabbed
browsing which might make up for that. The scripting available in the
next version looks really good for things like defining and executing
backup steps manually (which I prefer to automatic background
backups).
Right, Journey, the tabs are nice. If you do try it out, a nice
feature of the tabs is being able to have your focused pane open in
one tab, drag files from that pane to another "tab" and drop them
without ever having to open the tab. Or, hover over the tab for a
couple of seconds and the tab will automatically open.
Just something for you to try out if you do try the program.
I think I am going to try it out and if the thumbnail support is good
and it's otherwise solid I'll probably buy it if there is a free
upgrade to V7.
It seems like there are show-stoppers to many of the
Explorer-replacements that I've tried. PowerDesk takes forever to
show thumbnails and updates are rare even though it needs them in some
areas.
I'll give it a good trial period before purchasing though.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Gosh my feelings are hurt :( . Just kidding.
I know from the past, file manager preferences can be almost as
debated as politics.
I think that whatever file mgr you pick you will find it a lot easier
to do the things you want than using windows to do it.
