Latitude D630 handle?

Hi. I just started a new job, and the laptop I received is a Latitude
D630. It's a fine laptop, but it has an odd protuberance on the front
edge that looks almost like a handle, although it can't really be used
as one.

I don't have a camera to send a pic of it right now, but it's almost
an inch deep and maybe 7" wide, and it's as thick as the bottom
portion of the computer. It's not attached to the computer, though,
but rather to the battery. And it actually seems to be part of the
battery, so I can't get rid of it -- which is frustrating, because it
adds almost an inch to its size.

Any thoughts on what this thing is?
