OT: RSS Feeds, Atom?

I am clueless, for the most part, about RSS.
RSS = "Really Simple Syndication"?
A looong time ago I bought a license to something called Feed Demon,
and it somehow integrated into NewsGator. That's where I started to
get lost.
Now, it seems like so many things (e-mail programs, etc) can "do RSS".
I don't want to read RSS feeds using something like e-mail if there's
a better way to do it with a more dedicated tool.
Also, what is Atom? Is that it, or is there another technology in
addition to RSS and Atom?
I want to know THE BEST way to read RSS feeds in a timely fashion, and
THE BEST way to find useful RSS feeds.
The ones I would want the most are:
- News. Simple, not through endless loops on cable TV. Straight to
the point, good new summaries.
- Apple. I have about 10 links where I can go for Apple information.
I don't want to go to 10 links. I want one area where all the
articles are.
- Technology. What company owns what. I barely caught that Adobe
bought Macromedia. I'm not a corporate programmer with magazines
streaming across my desk. I need to get the headlines online and keep
up with them.
- Fun. Beats me... Simple Living, Recipes for someone whose
knowledge of cooking is boiling water and frying eggs. Health Info.
So, as always, I am hoping to find useful pointers to what the best
way to read and find RSS information is.
Thank you.
