Except for any drivers. Download/install from the vendor's web site. Also, think about installing Acrobat Reaver V8.... Adobe is turning it into a bit of "bloatware". Many of us use Foxit Reader. Small, nimble and it works....
I only install Flash, Shockwave and such as they are needed....

i would just add to bens good advice that once the os and all your drivers are installed the next steps would be to visit update.microsoft.com, select 'custom', and then download all updates from all categories... restart when prompted, and repeat over and over until it reports to you that there are no more updates. then visit www.adobe.com/downloads to get flash, shockwave, and adobe acrobat reader 8.0. finally, visit java.com and download the latest version of java. the above is bare bones for any pc..

SP2. This one contains the SATA drivers you would need. Anything earlier
does not and would cause you a world of hurt. (Contrary to its stated practice
of never adding major features to a basic operating system version, Micro$oft
did slipstream SATA drivers into SP2 under SERIOUS pressure from both its major
OEM customers and the drive manufacturers. This is one of the few times
Micro$oft caved in to pressure from the outside, albeit very very quietly. Not
much mention of this in the trade press.)
Once the XP install is complete, ALWAYS install the motherboard chipset drivers
first, or you are in for some more hurt. Then install the other drivers in
pretty much any order, although I choose video drivers first to see better what
I am doing, followed by Ethernet, audio, and modem (if any). Next are all the
zillion little patches to close up some of the defects and security holes in
Windows, plus the latest Java run-time from Sun. Installing updated hardware
drivers direct from the Microsoft download site or the Dell web site can cause
problems. I have installed drivers from Microsoft only to have the device fail
to work, so I had to roll back to the previous ones.
Anyway, that is all for the next time you do a clean install. If your system
is running nicely, do not mess with it. If you suspect something not working
right with the SATA drives, install the Dell updates... Ben Myers

When doing a clean install, I follow Dells instructions about the recommended order by
which drivers should install.
Now I have a well running XP system, but I can see that there are 2 new SATA drivers on
Dell support. My system is XPS400/Dimension9150.
Should I download these drivers and install straight away from XP ?
Or is it wiser to wait until next time I do a clean install ?
