Hi All,
I have a Dell Dim 4300 (XP, 512 RAM, 40 gb HD, etc). The pc was running
very slow. I ran some spyware cleanup software (Spybot, Adaware) and did
a virus scan with Norton 2007 which is currently installed. PC runs MUCH
better; however, it takes way too long to boot up. Specifically, it takes
about a minute for the desktop icons to appear after the background
appears. I have disabled everything I can in startup (Norton, etc.) There
is nothing hardly left in the RUN keys of the registry; but the PC still
takes way too long to boot. Also, I have checked the HD for errors and
done a defrag. In addition, I have even disabled the CD and floppy
drives. Oddly, it boots very fast in safe mode.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin
One more thing, I have emptied the Prefetch and temp folders.
Be sure to disconnect any hardware externals when testing in 'normal mode'
(USB hubs, hard disks, cameras, etc....)
If externals aren't involved, then you've got yourself a software issue
given your comments about safe mode.
My first guess would've been your AV, third party firewall, and/or any
security software that might be negotiating/managing your internet
connection.
Is the LED for the hard drive pegged while this is going on?
.
