I know full well what they are. I even used the darn things way back when I
was developing and testing software. Unfortunately the trend for geekish
program names has continued to this day with the many Linux distros. The
response of the typical person on the street is "What the @%%*)(^$ ???"
Just offering some perspective here as to what it might take for Linux to do
better as a Windows desktop replacement. Unfortunately there is a seriously
large legacy of geeky names, and it costs equally serious money to redo.

awk is Aho, Weinberger and Kernighan.
cat is from catenate.
sed is stream editor, /bin/ed being the editor (which I still use under XP).
yacc is yet another compiler compiler.
