Thanks. That gives me confidence about installing WinXP.
I have an installation CD for the Academic version of WinXP Pro,
so getting the OS is not a problem - just the availability of drivers
for the XPS laptop worried me. Now, about the Ubuntu drivers....

that should work, but you may have to provide the sata drivers durring the
installation. a recent dell branded wndows xp 'recovery' cd would have the
drivers built in. might be worth a few dollars to pick one up on ebay.
So would one press F6 during the installation and submit the XP
recovery CD as one would submit a floppy that contained the SATA
drivers?
As it turns out, Vista Business will be loaded on the laptop
as it comes from Dell. In the event that I install WinXP Pro as a
dual-boot with Vista, could the SATA drivers be found and
copied from the Vista "recovery" DVD?
