High speed cable internet

Finally getting rid of dialup, and going to cable.
The cable company says that they can feed the cable modem
into the ethernet card or just go into the USB connection.

Is there any difference in speed, or will the system work the same?
I have a Dell Dimension 8200, with Win XP SP2 , Internet Explorer.
I also have 256 mb pc800 ram. The ethernet card is10/100pci factory
installed.
This high speed thing is really going to be a change, from 28.8 kbt!
Thanks for your help!
