You need to attach an external monitor to see whether you have a problem with
the LCD screen or the entire computer. If you get nothing at all displayed on
the external monitor, chances are that either the replacement board is bad or
you missed a critical step in putting it all back together.
When I re-assemble a laptop, I typically power it up part way through putting it
back together. Most any laptop will power up without a hard drive, battery, and
even CD/DVD drive, but with an AC adapter and usually a keyboard is mandatory.
If the on-off switch is separate from the keyboard, you can even power it up
without the keyboard. Did exactly this today with an on-site repair of a Lenovo
Thinkpad T43p. With laptops being fairly tricky (and teeny-tiny) to work on,
it's always good to have a test that everything is OK in mid-assembly.

Stew,
No, I ripped apart anInspiron1000 (actually TWO that a guy bought, and
then
had fail) with my bare hands and sold off all the good pieces on eBay,
because
it was not worth repairing. Too cheaply made. It had no service manual,
but
really did not need one because the construction was so simple. So I
just took
out my little Philips head screwdriver and removed screws until it came
apart.
No problem here. You were just off by 100. :>) ... Ben

I'll only repeat for emphasis what others have said. Whatever you
do,
give
yourself plenty of time, and avoid any and all interruptions. Print
out
the
relevant pages of the service manual, read and re-read them before
starting.
I've torn down and even put back together plenty of laptops of
different
brands,
but I take the same careful approach every time. If I do not have
anything
resembling a service manual, I would even more slowly. Some say to
take
digital photos along the way for reference in putting the computer
back
together. Not a bad idea for a first-time effort, even with a decent
service
manual for referral... Ben Myers
Ben -
Didn't mean to put you on the spot with my earlier post.
Was this not the model that you were disassembling some time ago and
couldn't find documents ~~~~~~~and then you subsequently posted comments
about after you'd repaired it?
Or was it an 1100 model?
Or was I smoking hemp?
Thanks,
Stew
Hey guys,
Thanks for all the help. I replaced themotherboard, but now have a
new problem: The screen won't function.
I followed the step by step tearing down and rebuilding of the
machine, including connecting everything where it needs to be
connected, but now when I power it on, the screen won't even blink.
Any ideas?
Aaron
Darn.
Work your way back through the dis/re assembly, focusing on the LCD flex
cable connection to the system board.
Is the machine actually completing boot into Windows? (Audio .wav files for
the Windows boot)?
No beep codes when you boot?
No idea if it is booting to windows. No sounds playing, but I usually
keep my sounds on mute anyways so this wouldnt be a great indicator.
No beep codes when I boot. I did the re assembly, and made sure the
cable from the display was secured tightly onto the motherboard.
One thing to note is that when I turn it off again, it turns off right
away as opposed to the few seconds you have to usually wait while it's
in windows. This might be as a result of having a new BIOS and the
computer being in BIOS setup instead of booting directly to windows.
Not sure though.
