Getting serious again, as I said, I rebooted both computers and the problem
has gone away. Hopefully it was just a random glich and we will never know
the answer.

I have had no problems except for earlier today. I have some shared

something
and got an error. Then I tried to get a file from a desktop shared
folder
and it couldn't find the path. Basically, it does this when the desktop
is
turned off, but it wasn't. Incidentally, no problems in getting on the
internet.
Anyway, I rebooted both the desktop and the laptop and all is working
perfectly. I suspect this will be one of those unexplained glitches, but
does anyone have an idea of what might have occurred? The desktop had
been
on for a few days. I had accessed the shared folders a few hours prior
to
the problems and in fact had also used the printer.

Sounds like you are in Ad Hoc mode and you should be in infrastructure
mode so the laptop can work independent of the desktop.
